Mundka Air Crisis: 100+ Cancer Deaths & Industrial Pollution
Mundka Air Crisis 100+ Cancer Deaths: The recently Times of India published the article on cancer deaths in Mundka due to air pollution caused by industrial emission and road dust. The Mundka Industrial Area in Delhi has reached a breaking point. What was once an economic hub has transformed into a focal point for a devastating public health crisis. During a recent investigative visit by the SESD team, we uncovered a harrowing reality: over 100 out of 7,000 residents have reportedly succumbed to cancer in recent years. This mortality rate is not a coincidence; it is a direct consequence of prolonged exposure to a “toxic cocktail” of industrial emissions and construction debris.
Problem 1: Unchecked Industrial Exhaust
The primary source of toxicity in Mundka is the constant stream of industrial exhaust. Many units in this cluster operate without adequate air filtration systems, releasing hazardous chemicals and heavy metals directly into the breathing zone of local residents.
- Chemical Exposure: The fumes are not merely smoke; they contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sulfur dioxide, which are known to be carcinogenic.
- Proximity to Homes: One of the most alarming observations during our visit was how close these industrial chimneys are to residential colonies. People are eating, sleeping, and raising children just a few meters away from active emission points.
- Team of SESD: Society for Environment and Sustainable Development visited the Mundka Industrial Site and Residential Area, interacted with local residents and collected data on air pollution and health. The videos are available on our YouTube Channel.
Problem 2: The Chronic Road Dust Crisis
While the factories pollute from above, the broken infrastructure pollutes from below. Mundka has been plagued by unfinished road construction for a dangerously long period.
- PM_{2.5} and PM_{10} Impact: The heavy traffic in this industrial zone constantly grinds construction debris into fine dust. These particles are small enough to enter the bloodstream through the lungs, causing chronic inflammation.
- Government Neglect: Residents informed us that the road work has been pending for months/years. Without water sprinkling or temporary paving, the area remains under a permanent cloud of grey dust that never settles, even during low-wind conditions.

The Deadly Link to Cancer
Medical experts have long warned that the combination of industrial chemicals and fine particulate matter (PM_{2.5}) is a leading cause of lung and throat cancers. In Mundka, the exposure is double. When residents breathe in construction dust, it weakens their respiratory defenses, making them even more vulnerable to the carcinogenic industrial fumes. The reported 100+ deaths are a loud alarm bell that the authorities can no longer ignore. This is an environmental injustice that requires immediate legal and medical intervention.
SESD’s Demand for Accountability
SESD (Society for Environment & Sustainable Development) is formally calling for a two-pronged emergency response:
- Industrial Audit: An immediate air-quality audit of every factory in the Mundka cluster. Units found violating the Air Act must be sealed until they install proper scrubbers and filters.
- Infrastructure Completion: The Public Works Department (PWD) must complete the road construction on a war footing. In the interim, daily water sprinkling must be mandatory to suppress the dust that is killing the citizens.
Conclusion
We cannot afford to lose more lives to bureaucratic delays and industrial greed. The people of Mundka have a fundamental right to breathe clean air. SESD will continue to document this crisis and bring these stories to the forefront of the national conversation.
