The Aravallis: Protecting North India's Ancient Shield

Safeguarding the Aravalli Range to protect our climate, our water, and our future

EXPERIENCE THE ARAVALLI STORY

The Power of People over Policy

History shows that the protection of the Aravallis hasn’t always been a straight path. There have been moments where the intersection of government interest and judicial oversight led to verdicts that threatened to open these hills to further destruction. However, the true strength of the Aravalli movement lies in its people.

When wrong decisions were made, it was the collective voice of environmentalists, local communities, and citizens that rose in protest. These grassroots movements compelled the authorities and the Supreme Court to revisit their stance, leading to the reversal of dangerous policies. This proves that while laws are important, the ‘Ancient Shield’ is ultimately guarded by the vigilance of the public

Mass Protests

Its the Aravalli Bachao (Save Aravalli) marches that put pressure on Supreme Court and Government that influenced policy.

The Policy Reversal

The Court's change of heart wasn't accidental—it was a reaction to the undeniable evidence and anger presented by the people

The Vigilance of SESD

Our work at SESD is part of this ongoing vigilance to ensure such "wrong verdicts" don't happen again.

Beyond the Verdict: The Battle Continues

Even with the Supreme Court’s intervention and the strength of public protests, the Aravallis remain under massive threat. Illegal mining continues to scar the landscape in the shadows, and rapid urbanization relentlessly eats away at the green corridors. We have learned that government action alone is not enough to stop the machines.

This is where Public Awareness and Education become our strongest weapons. True conservation happens when every citizen understands that the ‘Ancient Shield’ is their own life-support system. Society for Environment and Sustainable Development-SESD plays a vital role here—bridging the gap between environmental science and community action.

By educating the next generation and fostering a culture of ecological responsibility, we create a human shield that no mining activity or urban sprawl can break.

The Shield Against Desertification

The Aravalli Range serves as a literal wall against the expanding Thar Desert. Without this “Ancient Shield,” the sand-laden winds from Rajasthan would sweep across the fertile plains of Haryana and Delhi unchecked.

This process, known as desertification, threatens the food security of millions. By protecting the Aravalli, we are essentially protecting the breadbasket of India.

Our field stories document how the thinning of forest cover in the Aravalli “gaps” has already led to an increase in dust storms in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Restoring the green cover on these hills isn’t just an environmental choice; it is a defensive necessity to prevent the encroachment of the desert into our living spaces.

Water Security and the Aravalli

Perhaps the most overlooked role of this ancient range is its function as a massive groundwater recharge zone.

The fractured hard rock of the Aravalli allows rainwater to percolate deep into the earth, replenishing the drying aquifers of North India. In a region facing a severe water crisis, the Aravalli is our most cost-effective water harvesting structure.

At SESD, our conservation efforts focus on creating “Continuous Contour Trenches” (CCTs) that slow down water runoff. Through our visual journalism, we show how these small interventions lead to a massive cumulative impact on the local water table. Every tree planted and every trench dug helps reinforce the “Ancient Shield” for future generations.
